First Time @ Adam Road Food Centre

Met up with a friend at Adam Road Food Centre for, not really supper, but a post-dinner meal. I was reminded of the times when I went cafe/restaurant-hopping when I was still an NSF. Why didn't I place more emphasis on hawker centres... It was my first time at Adam Road FC despite staying quite a close proximity to it. My friend could stomach nothing more than satay and sugar cane juice and I had dinner as well, so I tried only the famed prawn noodles and satay for this particular trip, namely Noo Cheng Prawn Mee and Zaiton Satay.

For the prawn noodles, I think I made the mistake of ordering the soup version. I thought the essence lies in the broth, but actually they provide you with it even if you order the dry one. Although the prawns were big and succulent, I felt that the broth was not rich enough and did not give me the urge to finish it till the last drop. I highly recommend the satay - it was one of the best I've ever had. When it was first brought to the table, the look of the dish already captivated me. The chicken and mutton were glistening with a beautiful colour and there weren't too many charred bits. The hawker must have had superb control of the fire. As expected, the chicken was juicier than the mutton, but the mutton had zero gaminess. My friend, being someone who avoids mutton just because of the odour, tried it with the peanut sauce, and wholly accepted it. Either I was right in saying it had no gaminess, or the peanut sauce was flavourful enough to mask it, or both. Either way, the mutton pleased not just one who usually embraces it, but also one who is averse to eating it.

Will probably have the chance to be back on Tuesday night to try two more famed stalls for mee goreng and shaved ice. While I'm at it, I shall also order the sambal stingray from an unassuming stall not found in any recommendations (at least none that I see), purely because I love sambal stingray. I know the food centre is also reputable for 2 legendary nasi lemak stalls, but they would have closed after 6pm. So I guess I'll need a third visit sometime in the future. Good food makes me happy. Adam Road FC is not a big place. It is circular and a 360 degrees turn can allow you to see all the stalls that operate there, but it still has it own draws: one, stalls that serve food said to be one of the best in the country, and two, quite a substantial number of stalls operating past 9pm.

I like watching vlogs of foreigners documenting their Singapore trips. They don't have to be famous, can be a teenager trying vlogging for the first time just for memory keepsake, or an amateur vlogger trying to make his mark. They don't have to have ten of thousands of views to make me watch their vlogs, but I do have some expectations of what I think is a good vlog. Anyway, so far I've rarely seen anyone vlog about their trip to Adam Road FC. Most people swarm to Lau Pa Sat and Maxwell. Those who delve deeper, go to Old Airport Road, Chomp Chomp, and Tiong Bahru market. But those who head to Adam Road FC or any lesser known (to them) hawker centres, are at a whole new level.

Once again (this isn't endorsed obviously), eat Zaiton Satay at Adam Road Food Centre. Maybe you might not want to eat satay from elsewhere after you've tasted it.
